DoD Training Center San Diego delivers Coronado Security+ training and the rest of the DoD 8140 certification lineup to personnel stationed across the Coronado peninsula — Naval Air Station North Island, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, the Naval Special Warfare community, and the aviation and afloat commands that operate from the island.

Classes are instructor-led, five days, and end with an exam seat in our on-site Pearson VUE center. For a sailor whose qualification deadline is measured in weeks rather than quarters, that combination is the whole point.

Getting Off the Island: Coronado, North Island and the Strand

Coronado sits in zip code 92118, with Naval Air Station North Island occupying 92135 at the northern end and Naval Amphibious Base stretching down the Silver Strand toward Imperial Beach. Between the carrier piers, the helicopter squadrons, the amphibious training commands and Naval Special Warfare, it is one of the densest operational footprints in the Navy.

It is also one of the harder places in San Diego to get out of on a weekday morning. The Coronado Bridge and the Strand are the only two land routes, and both back up predictably. The drive to our Kearny Mesa classroom runs about 18 miles by way of SR-75 and I-5 or I-805 — roughly 30 minutes when the bridge behaves, more when it does not.

That is precisely why we run classes as consecutive full days rather than as evening sessions spread across six weeks. One commute pattern for five days beats twelve trips across the bridge.

Security+ in Five Days for Coronado Commands

Security+ is the certification most Coronado students are sent for, and the reason is almost always the same: a work role got requalified, or a set of orders came with a qualification attached. Both of those come with a clock.

Our Security+ bootcamp runs 37.5 hours across five days against the current SY0-701 objectives. Lecture, hands-on lab and exam-style question drills are woven through every day rather than saved for Friday, because the exam tests judgment under time pressure and you cannot cram judgment on the last afternoon.

Sailors who have been away from a classroom for years tend to do noticeably better in a live room than on a streamed course. Someone in front of you notices when you stall on subnetting or on risk framing, and fixes it before Friday.

Then you test. Our on-site Pearson VUE testing center is in the same suite, so the exam is a walk down the hall rather than a second trip across the bridge on a different week.

Why Coronado Commands Send People Here

Raymond Hughes, ITC, USN (retired), teaches in this classroom and co-founded the San Diego office in 2019. He held the rating and the clearances the courseware is written around, which changes the answers you get when you raise your hand.

On the command side, DoD Training Center holds CAGE code 8KUJ4. A training officer at North Island or NAB can contract seats or a full private class through normal procurement rather than routing it through a personal card and a reimbursement form. Funding routes our Coronado students use are Navy COOL and Credentialing Assistance, MyCAA for spouses, and command training budgets — we do not accept Tuition Assistance or the GI Bill, and we will tell you that before you build a plan around it.

What the Week Looks Like

Class runs Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00, at 9089 Clairemont Mesa Blvd in Kearny Mesa. Monday opens with a diagnostic so the instructor teaches the room in front of him rather than a generic syllabus. Tuesday through Thursday are lecture, labs and question analysis. Friday is review, a practice exam and a direct answer on whether you should sit that day.

Parking is on site. Upcoming dates are on the San Diego class schedule. If your rotation does not line up with any of them, tell us — group classes get scheduled around the command, not the other way around.

How long does it take to get from Coronado to your classroom?

About 18 miles and roughly 30 minutes by way of the Coronado Bridge and I-5 or I-805, depending on how the bridge is moving. Students coming up the Silver Strand from NAB typically allow a little longer in the morning.

Can you run a class on base at North Island or NAB Coronado?

Yes. On-site delivery at commands is a core part of what the San Diego team does, and Coronado is a short trip for us. We hold CAGE code 8KUJ4 so a training officer can contract a dedicated class through standard procurement channels.

What happens if I do not pass the exam on Friday?

You keep the courseware and the instructor’s contact, and you can schedule a retest at our Pearson VUE center whenever you are ready. We would rather tell you on Friday that you are not ready than watch you burn an attempt to hit an arbitrary deadline.

Does Navy COOL cover Security+ training and the exam?

Navy COOL and Credentialing Assistance are the routes most of our Coronado students use, and they are what we would point you toward first. We do not accept Tuition Assistance or the GI Bill. Ask us before you submit anything and we will tell you which path actually works.
