Imperial Beach sits at the southern end of the Silver Strand, immediately south of the Naval Amphibious Base’s training beaches and directly under the helicopter traffic that has defined the town for decades. The population runs heavily Navy — active-duty families, spouses, and veterans who separated locally and stayed for the coast. DoD Training Center San Diego provides Imperial Beach CompTIA training and IT certification bootcamps to all of them.

Classes are five consecutive days, taught in person, and finish with the certification exam available in the same suite as the classroom.

Imperial Beach, the Silver Strand and South San Diego

Imperial Beach covers zip code 91932 at the southwest corner of the continental United States, bordered by the Tijuana River estuary to the south, San Diego Bay to the east, and the Silver Strand running north to Coronado. The Navy’s outlying landing field on the town’s eastern edge has put helicopters over Imperial Beach for generations, and the relationship between the town and the fleet is close enough that “Navy family” describes a large share of the residents outright.

Practical geography: the drive to our Kearny Mesa classroom is about 20 miles, roughly 30 minutes north on I-5 outside of peak commute. The alternative route up the Strand through Coronado is scenic and slower. Chula Vista and National City sit between Imperial Beach and the classroom, so a South Bay carpool from any of the three is straightforward.

For a spouse or a separating sailor in Imperial Beach, the relevant point is that a nationally recognized IT certification is available inside a half-hour drive — and that it is worth considerably more in the job market than another year of local service work.

Security+ and the Path Into Cleared Work

San Diego has an unusual employment feature: a very large number of local jobs sit on DoD contracts that name a certification requirement in the contract language. Security+ is the one named most often, because it satisfies the IAT Level II baseline.

What that means for an Imperial Beach resident is concrete. A separating sailor with hands-on experience and no certification is competing on a résumé. The same person holding Security+ is eligible for positions the first candidate is filtered out of automatically — often at the same commands they just left, on the contractor side.

If you are starting without a technical background, A+ comes first, then Network+, then Security+. That sequence takes real time, and we will not pretend otherwise. It also works.

Classes are small enough for the instructor to work with individual students during lab blocks. That is the difference between finishing and not finishing for people returning to a technical classroom after years away, which describes a large share of who we teach.

The Pearson VUE authorized test center is in the same suite as the classroom. Finish Friday, test Friday. One trip north, not two.

What to Expect From the Week

Hours are 08:00 to 16:00, Monday through Friday, at 9089 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Monday opens with a diagnostic. Tuesday through Thursday alternate lecture, hands-on lab and exam-style question drills. Friday is review, a practice exam and a direct answer on readiness.

Parking is on site. Class dates are published on the San Diego schedule. If a specific week matters because of a deployment or a childcare arrangement, tell us early and we will work with it.

Do I have to take the class with you to test at your center?

No. The Pearson VUE testing center is open to anyone with a scheduled CompTIA, Cisco, ISACA, (ISC)2 or EC-Council exam, regardless of where or how you studied.
