DoD Training Center San Diego provides National City CompTIA training for all four of those groups, from a first A+ certification to the Security+ credential a DoD contract requires.

Classes are five days, instructor-led, and end with an exam seat in our on-site Pearson VUE testing center. The classroom is about 20 minutes north up I-805.

National City covers zip code 91950 and sits between Naval Base San Diego to the north and Chula Vista to the south, with Bonita and Lincoln Acres to the east. The Naval Base’s southern gates, the National City Marine Terminal and the Pier 32 area put a working port economy right in the middle of a residential city, and the result is a lot of people whose jobs sit adjacent to IT without being in it.

That adjacency is the opportunity. A rigger, a logistics clerk or a facilities technician with an A+ and a Network+ is a serious candidate for an IT job on the same base at meaningfully better pay — and the certification, not a four-year degree, is what actually gates the transition.

The drive to our Kearny Mesa classroom is about 14 miles up I-805 to Clairemont Mesa Blvd, roughly 20 minutes outside rush hour. Parking is on site.

Starting From Zero: The A+ to Security+ Path

Plenty of people in National City want into IT and get stuck at the same place — a jobs board full of postings that all require a certification they do not have and are not sure how to get.

The path is not complicated. A+ establishes that you can work with hardware, operating systems and troubleshooting. Network+ proves you understand how the machines talk to each other. Security+ is the one that opens DoD and cleared work to you, because it satisfies the IAT Level II baseline that a very large number of San Diego contract positions require.

Done in sequence with instructor-led classes rather than self-paced video, that is a realistic run for someone with a full-time job and no prior IT background. What to Expect From Your Class Week

Hours are 08:00 to 16:00, Monday through Friday, at 9089 Clairemont Mesa Blvd in Kearny Mesa. Monday is a diagnostic so the instructor knows what the room already understands. Tuesday through Thursday are lecture, hands-on lab work and exam-style question drills. Friday is review, a practice exam and a direct answer about whether you should sit that day.
