Point Loma is where the Navy does its information warfare thinking. DoD Training Center San Diego provides Point Loma cyber security training to the sailors, government civilians and cleared contractors who work that mission — instructor-led certification bootcamps aligned to DoD 8140 work roles, taught about 20 minutes from the peninsula at our Kearny Mesa classroom.

Naval Base Point Loma consolidates a set of commands across zip codes 92106 and 92152 — the submarine base at Ballast Point, the fuel depot, the fleet anti-submarine warfare training center, and the NIWC Pacific campuses at Topside and Old Town. Liberty Station, the former Naval Training Center, sits at the base of the peninsula, and Cabrillo National Monument caps the point.

Getting off the peninsula in the middle of a workday is the real constraint. Rosecrans and Nimitz funnel everything through a handful of choke points, and the drive to our classroom runs roughly 13 miles by way of I-8 and SR-163 — about 20 minutes in normal traffic, longer if you leave at 16:30. Ocean Beach, Loma Portal and Midway sit between the base and the freeway.

Because most Point Loma students are on a compressed schedule, our five-day format matters more here than almost anywhere: one week out of the office, one certification, done.

It is not a harder version of the same exam — it is a different kind of test, written for someone expected to make risk decisions rather than configure a device. Our CISSP bootcamp is taught in the room, by an instructor who can hear a wrong answer and immediately explain why the technically correct choice is not the exam-correct choice. Either way, the exam seat is in our building. Our Pearson VUE authorized test center means Point Loma students make one trip off the peninsula, not two.

Day one is a diagnostic and objective mapping — the instructor establishes what the room already knows so the week is not spent re-teaching material a group of senior engineers mastered a decade ago. Days two through four run lecture, labs and heavy question analysis. Day five is review, a full-length practice exam, and an honest read on readiness.

Students who need the exam that week schedule it down the hall. Students who want two more weeks with the courseware take it home and come back to test. Nobody gets pushed into a seat they are not ready for — a failed attempt costs you more than a delay does.
